Bioinformatician, Hossein Estiri, joins LMI Scientific Advisory Board

Loving Mind Institute, Inc. a 501(c)3 national non-profit organization dedicated to advancing biomedical research and scientific initiatives in mental illness and addiction announces Dr. Hossein Estiri’s joining of the LMI Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). Hossein, an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School & Massachusetts General Hospital, applies a variety of data science methodologies from Electronic Health Records (EHR) to develop computational models explaining complex health outcomes.

“It is our honor that Dr. Estiri joins LMI’s Scientific Advisory Board and represents LMI’s appreciation of the importance of biomedical informatics in addressing the health challenges of mental illness and addiction and our continued commitment to attract the next generation of biomedical thought leaders,” says Marion J. Riggs, LMI Founder and Executive Director. Mental illness and addiction are highly prevalent and disabling with 44.7 million and 21.5 million Americans experiencing these disorders in any given year, respectively. Clinical research informatics that mines EHR data is essential to improving treatment outcomes for this patient population.

About Hossein Estiri, Ph.D.

Hossein Estiri, PhD, is a computational demographer, data scientist, and clinical research informaticist. His official training in urban design has laid the theoretical foundations of his work in a socio-ecological approach, giving him an opportunity to include consideration of the notion of “context” in his research. Dr. Estiri applies a variety of data science methodologies, including geo-spatial and statistical learning techniques, to developing computational models that explain complex ecological and health outcomes. Dr. Estiri’s work in clinical research informatics has focused on exploiting the Electronic Health Record (EHR) data for secondary use and architecting high-performance visual data analytics systems for transforming EHR data into intelligence for decision making in healthcare and population health management.

About the Loving Mind Institute

The Loving Mind Institute (LMI), Inc. is a 501(c)3 national non-profit organization dedicated to advancing biomedical research and scientific initiatives in mental illness and addiction. Mental illness and addiction are devastating to patients, friends, family, and to society as a whole. The numbers are staggering. 1 in 6 American adults (44.7 million) live with a form mental illness from mild to severe, and 10.4 million suffer from a severe form of mental illness. In 2014, approximately 21.5 million people aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder in the past year. To address this public health crisis, LMI coordinates scientific and educational campaigns aimed at improving medical and therapeutic outcomes for affected populations. Towards this aim, LMI will fund biomedical research and other targeted scientific initiatives that fundamentally improve our knowledge and treatment of these conditions. As part of our scientific initiatives outreach, LMI utilizes print, social media, and digital tools to translate scientific progress and treatment information to the community.
